Hurricane Katrina was the 6th strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin. The official death toll now stands at 1,322 and the damage estimates range from $70 billion to $130 billion. Over 1 million people were displaced.

FAFA people were there to help 2 weeks after Katrina hit. They were setting up infrastructure, helping to organize clearing and providing emergency medical relief. Our people were located in Mississippi. (Top)

The storm surge breached the levee system which protect New Orleans from lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River. Katrina caused major damage to coastal regions of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. In Louisiana, the hurricane's eye made landfall at 6:10am CDT on Monday, 29 August. After 11:00am CDT, several sections of the levee system in New Orleans collapsed. By early September, people were being forcibly evacuated, mostly by bus to neighboring states. (Top)
