BASIC STUDY POINTERS(Top)

Listening & Reading
First Aid For All will give you all of the essential information both orally and in text format. Most people focus on different types of information when they use the two different skills. We suggest that you at first listen to the information. If there are key points which you must remember, go back and read the text. You may want to keep notes of the particularly important information such as the number of compression per minute for an adult or an infant.

Practice by Doing the Activities
With much of the information there are activities. These are there to help consolidate what you have learned. If you do not get an activity perfect, simply go over it again. It does not matter how many times you practice something, the important point is to get it right.
Review when Required
The information which you need to know to complete and the activity is correctly presented in the voice and text sections. If you are not sure of how to proceed, go back and review the information. You may have to go back more than one page to find the information.
Do the Activities
The activity is directly related to the information which has been presented in the pages which precede it. The skill which the activity requires is necessary if you are to pass the First Aid For All assessment. Some of the activities require practice to get them correct. You will have to do them more than once. Before you take the assessment, we suggest that you are comfortable with all of the activities in First Aid For All.
Using the Video for Learning
If there is a video on the page, it will begin to play as soon as you move onto that page. If it is your first time to be presented with this information, you will want to listen to the voice and read the text in order to be certain of the main points. Since you are concentrating on the content, you will not focus closely on what is happening in the video. Once you know what to do, it is a good idea to replay the video paying close attention to what the experienced first aider is doing. You can replay this several times if you like. You do not have to listen to the whole voice. When you wish to go to the next page, simply press next page.

Mastering Compressions
One of the key aspects to performing rescue breathing and cardiopulmonary resuscitation is doing chest compressions. There are a number of points which you need to learn from our course in order to do this correctly. You will be required to perform CPR on an adult, youth and infant. The number of compressions in the specified time will vary according to the type of victim. To help you practice this before you take the assessment, there are several activities which require you to demonstrate that you can do this properly.

Here are a few hints to help make your learning easier. When you start the compressions and/or breathing exercises, you press either the Space Bar or the Enter Key, this starts the activity AND it counts as the first compression. At first this will be difficult.

To improve your accuracy in the rate and rhythm of your breathing and compressions, count out loud. When performing CPR on an adult victim, you will perform a series of 15 compression and 2 breaths in approximately 15 seconds. The most difficult part of this is often when you shift from doing the compressions to doing the breaths. When you complete the compressions wait about 1.6 seconds then give your first breath, wait about 1.6 seconds, then give the breath. Wait 1.6 seconds and then give the second breath. Wait about 1.6 seconds and then begin the next compression. Many people find it helpful to watch the Virtual Manikins in order to increase accuracy.

Sometimes you will pass when performing CPR, but you have varied you rate and rhythm quite a lot. The program will suggest that you practice a bit more although you did pass.

We recommend that when you are doing CPR on the computer simulation you use two hands.

Doing The Assessment
When you feel you are ready, you can take the assessment. If you have never had any training in first aid, you will need to do the First Aid For All course before you can complete this test. There are two sections to the test: 1) Theoretical 2) Practical. In order to pass the test you must achieve 100% on both sections of this test. If you get an answer incorrect you can study up on what you missed and then retake the test as many times as you want. The test is a criterion reference test which is designed to test competence. That means that the focus is on helping the individual develop skills which are required in an emergency. It is not important how long it takes for a client to develop such a skill.

Time to complete the test
You will require at least 1 hour 15 minutes to take the test. Some people may take 2 hours to complete it. If you have to leave the test for some reason, there are sections where, when completed you do not have to start at the very beginning the next time you take the test. Once you have completed the Theoretical Section of the test, you do not have to do it again. Similarly, if you have completed a whole activity in the practical section, you will not have to redo that section.
Completing the Theoretical Section
There are 24 multiple choice questions in  this section. You must get all of the theoretical section correct before you can go on to the second section. If you make an error on this section, the testing is stopped and must start from the beginning again the next time you take it.
Completing the Practical Section
In this part of the test there are several different sections. These are like the activities in the course, so if you have gone through the CD you will be familiar with how to drag and drop items and how to do timing exercises. You must complete each activity without reference back to the program. If you make a mistake within a section you are able to redo that section. Once you get it correct, you can then move onto the next practical activity.
Submitting your results. You must get all questions in the theoretical and practical parts of the test correct in order to qualify for a Certificate of Achievement. You are able to take the test as often as required in order to score 100%. When you have done this, a message will appear on your screen saying that you now qualify for your certificate. You must log onto the Internet and submit your test results to us. When yo press the Submit button the program will send your personal information and test results to us. We will then send out the first aid certificate to you.
* IF YOUR NAME IS INCORRECT YOUR CERTIFICATE WILL HAVE THE WRONG NAME PRINTED ON IT.
* IF YOUR ADDRESS IS INCORRECT YOUR CERTIFICATE WILL BE SENT TO THE WRONG ADDRESS!

After you receive your certificate
For many people, when they complete First Aid For All it will be the first time that they come across much of the information on how to save a life. It is natural that we will forget some things. The best way to refresh our memories is to do a quick review of the areas where we are weak. First Aid For All has provided a simple way to do this. On the upper left of the main First Aid For All screen there is a section entitled Tools, Site Map.
Once you have gone through the complete First Aid For All course, you should be able to glance at the site map and identify any area where you are not quite certain of what to do. Simply click on that section to get an instance refresher. (Top)
