ADVANTAGES OF VIRTUAL LEARNING (Top)
The First Aid For All VIRTUAL ASSESSMENT has a number of advantages over the traditional use of a plastic manikin. Here are a few advantages.

ELIMINATES RISK OF INFECTION
•  Eliminates the possibility of any cross infection coming from
    multiple learners sharing plastic manikins.

•  It eliminates the risk of allergic reactions.
•  No need to depend on how well the manikin is cleaned.

IMPROVES QUALITY CONTROL
•  100% consistency of learning and assessment outcomes.
•  In a traditional first aid classroom, some people miss out on a complete assessment.
    F
irst Aid For All
assessment is complete for every student.

•  Facilitates elevated levels of assessment evidence collection.
This provides feedback into future developments in first aid training.
(Top)

EQUITY OF ACCESS
•  Simulated virtual environments require responses to a much wider variety of
    emergency situations than traditional assessment.

•  First Aid For All is friendly to under represented groups such as disabled users,
    remote users, illiterate users etc.
(Top)

IMPROVED TEST CONDITIONS
•  Students can repeat the assessment until competent. The assessment is an
    important part of skill developmental.

•  Less stress for students as they can proceed at their own pace. If they make
mistakes the can go back and relearn.
(Top)

THOROUGH TESTING
•  Simulated virtual environments require responses to a much wider variety of
    emergency situations than traditional assessment.

•  Not only are the main skills tested, but students are also required to
demonstrate all skills which lead up to proper action.

• Students receive feedback as they progress through the assessment. They
can gauge their own level of progress
.

• They have unlimited access to practice so they develop confidence. (Top)

OTHER AREAS USING VIRTUAL TRAINING
Multimedia courses have been very success in teaching competency based skills. Here are a few other areas where virtual training is already well accepted:

  • Driving Courses
  • Practice for flying commercial jet liners
  • Brain surgery
  • Giving injections

THE NUMBER 1 MYTH

Myth
To learn CPR you need to practice blowing into a plastic manikin.

Truth

  1. Practice on a plastic manikin is only one way to learn CPR.
  2. Other ways do NOT involve breathing into a piece of plastic. You can practice on someone you are comfortable with or you may train in a virtual simulation.
  3. First Aid For All provides you with V-mani ©, a virtual manikin system.

The procedures for conducting CPR have evolved through practice and scientific research over the last 25 years. In a real emergency what is important?

  • you know what to do
  • you take action.

When learning how to perform CPR what is important?

  • a) All training programs provide information on how to act. This includes how many compression or breaths you should perform in what amount of time, etc.
  • b) All training programs provide some way to practice what you have learned. Performing CPR is a practical skill. You must interpret what you have to do and then you must perform appropriate actions.

First Aid For All (Lay Rescuer CPR) provides you with both the correct information and the opportunity to practice what you have been taught, and you can do this in the comfort of your home or office.

FAFA'S VIRTUAL MANIKINS
One great innovations developed by First Aid For All is the creation of Virtual Manikins. They are highly interactive and play a key role in helping people doing their hands-on practice. The following sections will provide you with a better understanding of the importance of this development. (Top)

Description of the First Aid For All Virtual Manikin System
V-mani© is the name First Aid For All gives to a technology that represents a range of different virtual manikins. As in the use of plastic or cardboard manikins, V-mani© is there for students to practice their first aid skills and to demonstrate that they have mastered the required competencies.

On our virtual manikins students practice hand position, depth of compressions, doing compressions, etc. V-mani©  also serves other educational functions. It is an ideal medium to demonstrate key points and to provide direct relevant feedback to the actions you take. To help better understand V-mani© here is a brief description of its development and what it does.

No other first aid training system in the world can provide you with such detailed feedback at your convenience. It is not easy to do CPR the first time you try. V-mani© is there for you to practice as many times as you like and so you develop confidence. Research tells us it is difficult to remember everything we are taught the first time we are exposed to it. With First Aid For All, you can review and practice your CPR skills whenever you want. First Aid For All created the idea of a Virtual Manikin.
As in the plastic or cardboard manikin, the First Aid For All manikin provides students with a way to see how a procedure is carried out. It also provides the student with a way to demonstrate that they can execute the same skill. V-mani© provides real time accurate feedback to learners. First Aid For All created V-mani© as a key interactive learning tool. V-mani are generically human. They play the roles of Demonstrator, Robot, and Victim. (Top)

i) First Aid For All – V-mani© Demonstrator
V-mani©
is used to demonstrate key points on the screen. Once the information has been presented, V-mani© goes through the action to show the student how a skill is performed. The First Aid For All Demonstrator manikin is interactive. It performs the skill which is described. You can replay the demonstration as often as necessary. (Top)

ii) First Aid For All – V-mani© Robot
This manikin gives the student a way to practice their newly learned skills. It is available at anytime and provides the student with a visual representation of what they are learning. Specifically V-mani© Robot is a sophisticated interactive learning tool which provides you with:

  • FEEDBACK: All skills require that they be performed to a specific skill level. V-mani© provides extensive information back to you so you know how well you have done. For example you will receive feedback on the consistency of your chest compressions, as well as on your rate and rhythm.
  • IMMEDIATE REVIEW: Students can do any activity any time. They can go back and do it as a review whenever they would like.
  • RESPONSIVE: In activities V-mani© responds precisely to your actions. As the student does compressions and breaths, correctly or incorrectly, the on-screen manikins reacts in exactly the same way.
  • ANALYSIS: The graphs and analysis of the student’s performance on the task relate directly to their actions on the virtual manikin. As they perform on the manikin they see a real time graph of their performance. (Top)

iii) First Aid For AllV-mani© Victim
This virtual manikin takes on the role of a victim or of different victims in a given situation. This helps provide a more realistic learning environment. It provides:

  • CONTEXT SENSITIVE ACTIONS: Accurate demonstrates required symptoms which relate to a specific context. This manikin plays the role as specified by the situation.
  • ACCURATE RESPONSES: Responses are according to interactions directed by the student. Thus V-mani© Victim responds to the actions which V-mani Robot executes according to the instructions of the student.
  • AGE SENSITIVE: It reacts according to the age as specified by the situation. (Top)
